Special School Units
SSU-3 – A Step Forward in Inclusive Education
KidsCare Kenya proudly presents the third phase of its Special School Units (SSU) journey, SSU-3 – Inclusion for All. This quality improvement project builds on our work since 2020 to transform inclusive education in six primary schools across Lunga Lunga Sub-county. These schools now host dedicated units for children with intellectual and physical disabilities, ensuring no child is left behind.
Project Goal & Reach
SSU-3 is dedicated to enhancing the quality of special education units, directly supporting:
- 180 children aged 4–18 with intellectual and physical disabilities
- Parents and caregivers who play a crucial role in child development
- Educators and support staff across the six SSUs
Each unit currently accommodates 30 children and is staffed by full-time qualified special education teachers. These learners receive tailored education, care, and health guidance in a safe and nurturing environment embedded within regular primary schools—fostering inclusive learning and community integration.
Why It Matters: The Challenges We Face
Our target groups face complex and overlapping challenges, including:
- Stigma and shame around disability
- Low parental involvement and poor access to services
- Inadequate inclusive education infrastructure
- Gaps in hygiene, safety, and documentation
- Lack of teacher training and SRHR education
- Poverty, climate impacts, and social exclusion
These insights came directly from parents, professionals, and community discussions—and shape our approach for SSU-3.
