What we have achieved in the rural part of Kenya of Kwale County in Lungalunga sub county in 15 Years.

Breaking Barriers in inclusive learning!

At the start of 2024, the enrollment in the special school units had declined with numbers dropping to just 77 from 180 learners across six Special School Units (SSUs). Many children with disabilities in the region struggled to access education due to financial constraints, lack of mobility aids, and limited community awareness about inclusive learning. Additionally, the absence of Special Needs Education (SNE) teachers in some SSUs further hindered learning opportunities.
Determined to turn things around, KidsCare Kenya did further interventions such as the reintroduction of a feeding program across all SSUs provided daily meals, easing the burden on struggling families and encouraging consistent attendance. Social workers intensified home visits, identifying challenges such as the need for wheelchairs and other mobility aids. Additionally, awareness campaigns were conducted within communities, educating caregivers on the importance of inclusive education and encouraging greater involvement.
One of the most significant breakthroughs came with the deployment of 15 full-time SNE teachers across four SSUs. While two SSUs remained without a dedicated teacher, the local government committed to addressing this gap. The presence of trained SNE educators dramatically improved the learning environment, providing structure, specialized instruction, and individualized attention for children with disabilities.
By November 2024, these efforts paid off enrollment rebounded to 112 learners, nearly restoring the numbers to where they had been at the project’s start. The success was not just in numbers but in the strengthened commitment of the community, the improved quality of education, and the renewed hope among caregivers and students alike.
